Saturday of Lent 2 – March 14, 2020 –John 3:16
Christ Jesus is the ground of faith,
Who was made flesh and suffered death;
All then who trust in Him alone
Are built on this chief cornerstone.[2]
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” –John 3:16
At the core of Christian faith is the truth that in Jesus Christ God became a human being to redeem the world. Here is a most radical statement: The all-holy God personally joined our world of sin and suffering to redeem save it.
The cornerstone of the Christian faith is Christ crucified for sin. As the Apostle Paul stated, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.” - 1 Corinthians 15:17 The Psalmist David would predict, “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.” Psalm 118:22 To this day, Christ’s Church is being “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.” -Ephesians 2:20
As you reflect on this hymn remember this - Nothing is truer than God’s statement that, “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” -1 Corinthians 3:11.
Jesus Christ is God’s foundation stone, and capstone, for mankind and the universe. May we build our lives upon Him, and help others to do the same.
Grant, most merciful Lord, to Your faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve You with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen [3]
