Reading: Hebrews 2:1–9
Additional Scriptures: Psalm
31:9–16; Isaiah 53:10–12
This section of Hebrews opens with an instruction: pay
attention to the truths of the Gospel. The illustration given is that the truth
of the Gospel is like an anchor in the ocean. If you are not tethered to that
anchor, you run the risk of being carried away from it and into danger. If the
recipients of Hebrews did not tether themselves to the truth (“pay much closer
attention to”), they ran the risk of exchanging the truth for something else.
This is the first of five warnings presented in the book of Hebrews. The point
is clear. Stay connected to Christ at all times.
Lord God, bless
Your Word wherever it is proclaimed. Make it a word of power and peace to
convert those not yet Your own and to confirm those who have come to saving
faith. May Your Word pass from the ear to the heart, from the heart to the lip,
and from the lip to the life that, as You have promised, Your Word may achieve
the purpose for which You send it; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.[2]
O God, You have called us
to be Your children, and have promised that those who suffer with Christ will
be heirs with him of Your glory: Arm us with such trust in him that we may ask
no rest from his demands and have no fear in his service; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever
and ever. Amen[3]
