Wednesday of Lent 2 - March 20, 2019 – Psalm 121:1-2
I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and
earth.
Psalm 121 is the inspiration verse for our hymn God
Who Made the Earth and Heaven (LSB #877). God the Father who created the
entire universe has promised to direct your life. He is the one who orders your
day and directs your path. He has brought you to faith by the power of the
Spirit’s work and He will sustain that faith. We can confidently trust in Him
because He has established His everlasting covenant with His own people.
This psalm was sung by pilgrims
making their journey to Jerusalem, on Mount Zion, for one of the feasts. Psalm
120–134 are the traditional “Songs of Ascent” that together formed a hymn book
used by pilgrims as they went up to Jerusalem. Although the psalmist was
looking to the high ground, he was not looking for the mountains themselves to
help him. But rather the mountains reminded him of God’s creative power, and
that God alone is our source of help.
In times of trouble, in testing
times, where do you go? Where do you find rest and refuge? The Psalmist reminds
us that our help comes from the Lord. He has created us. He has promised to
sustain His creation and the creatures therein; which includes you His child,
His pride and joy. Take refuge in Him. His guiding hand will sustain you in
every circumstance. You belong to Him. He will sustain you.
Collect for
Psalm 121: Lord Jesus Christ, You have prepared a quiet place for us in Your
Father’s eternal home. Watch over our welfare on this perilous journey, shade
us from the burning heat of day, and keep our lives free of evil now and
forever.[1]
O God, You so loved the world
that you gave Your only begotten Son to reconcile earth with heaven; Grant that
we, loving You above all things, may love our friends in You, and our enemies
for Your sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and
the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.[2]
