Psalm
119:129-136 – The appointed Psalm for
next week is taken from the longest Psalm and is under the Hebrew letter Pe.
The Psalmist recalls the righteousness of God’s law and how they are a delight
to follow. As we focus on the Lord and His precepts, we find direction in
living.
Your
testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them.
Your testimonies are wonderful: The psalmist again
declared his wonder and pleasure in the word of God. It was a continuing source
of fascination to him.
“The word
‘wonderful’ is equivalent to our use of the word miraculous. These
testimonies are supernatural, superhuman.” (Morgan)
The testimonies are supernatural in their nature,
being free from error. They are supernatural in their effects, as they
instruct, elevate, strengthen, and comfort the soul.
“Therefore my
soul keeps them;” The enduring,
abiding delight he had in the word of God prompted greater obedience. This was
obedience in more than outward action; it was obedience in soul.[2]
Collect for Psalm 119: Lord, you are
just and your commandments are eternal. Teach us to love you with all our
hearts and to love our neighbor as ourselves, for the sake of Jesus our Lord. [3]
Lord of all
power and might, Author and Giver of all good things, graft in our hearts the
love of Your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness,
and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ Your Son,
our Lord we pray. Amen.[4] –
