Luke 2:22-40 reflection

Luke 2:22–40

You’re never too old to be used by God.

Though Simeon and Anna were both advanced in years what we see is that the LORD can use people regardless of age.

1. Anna – the Bible tells us that she was advance in years. 84 years to be exact. And that she had been married for 7 years.

I often think of my grandmother when I hear this story…

Single for the first 25 years of her life

Married for the next 25 years.

A widow for 52 years

But you can be used of God regardless of age – Moses lead the people when he was 90.

Yet, regardless of age the LORD always remains faithful.

2. Simeon – We don’t know how old he was – yet the Bible tells us.

A. Righteous/Devout – there was something about his character. – ML King had a dream – in which his children would be judged – not by the color or their skin – but by the content of their character.

B. Waiting for the consolation of Israel.

C. Would not see death until he had seen the LORD’s Christ.

D. His words – we heed-

1. This child is for the rising/falling of many.

2. This happens even today.

E. A warning to Mary – your heart will be broken.

1. She will hear Jesus’ words.

2. She will see Jesus actions.

3. She will see her Son suffer as none other.

F. His response

1. Allow me to depart in peace.

2. Because Your word has been fulfilled.

3.  For us today.

A. We too can be at peace regardless of outward circumstances.

B. Because the LORD has fulfilled his word to us in sending Jesus.

Thus we pray:

Christ, our Lord, and Savior dear,
Be Thou ever near us.
Grant us now a glad new year.
Amen, Jesus
