Jesus teaches in the Synagogue.
Hymn: #16 Be Still, My Soul
Law/Gospel Theme: Jesus’ coming to the Earth fulfilled the scriptures of the Old Testament. In our lesson for today we will see that He is just beginning to teach the good news.
The Bible says that Jesus returned to Galilee and everyone in the countryside heard about Him and praised Him. Then Jesus went to Nazareth and stood up in the synagogue and opened his scroll to teach the people.
When teaching in Galilee and then Nazareth His message is that He is God’s son and has come to save God’s people. In Nazareth He will be rejected which will fulfill the scriptures. Jesus taught that He would make the imprisoned free and the blind see. And by faith He opens our eyes to see Him as our Savior, Lord, and friend.
Prayer: Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation. That we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works. Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
Hymn: # 17 Be Thou My Vision Vv. 1-2
Confession/Absolution:
LORD - we pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father.
In Your compassion forgive us our sins. Known and unknown. Things done. And left undone. And so uphold us by Your Spirit.
That we may live and serve you in newness of life. To the honor and glory of Your Name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Almighty God have mercy on you. Forgive you all your sins.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ. And may He strengthen you in all goodness.
And by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
– Luke 4:16-19
Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
Hymn: # 17 Be Thou My Vision Vv. 3-4
Jesus’ came to earth to share good news will everyone. Today we are going to hear a story about when Jesus first started teaching in the synagogue.
The Bible says that Jesus returned to Galilee and everyone in the countryside heard about Him and praised Him. Then Jesus went to Nazareth and stood up in the synagogue and opened his scroll to teach the people.
Jesus said, “The spirit of the Lord is with me and He has given me the job to tell the good news to the poor. He sent me to tell the prisoners that they can be free, the blind that they can see again, and the oppressed that they can be free to tell everyone that it is the time when God is with us.
When Jesus was done talking he sat down and told the people that all the old testament scriptures would be complete because of Jesus.
Isn’t that wonderful?
For many, many years everyone was waiting for God to send someone to save them and who was that person? That’s right, Jesus. Jesus has the power to do miracles and save lives.
When the Bible talks about Jesus setting prisoners free it doesn’t mean that He is freeing people from a jail. It means that when people are all tied up in sin He can take the sin away and set them free. Sin takes away our happiness and keeps us away from God. Jesus helps get rid of the sin so that we can be with God.
Jesus Makes the Blind See
Being blind is when you cannot see. When people are blind they can sometimes wear glasses or have surgery to fix their eyes. But Jesus was able to do miracles and so He healed the eyes of people. Jesus also helps up see the truth. He helps us see God and helps us see what the right thing to do is.
After so many years of waiting Jesus is finally here. And it is time for us to now tell the God news about Jesus. You do this every day with your life, your words and your actions. You too are a sermon in shoes. [1]
Thank you, Jesus for your love and care. Thank you for teaching us about the Father’s plan to bring good news for us and for all people.
The Lord has given us one another and we give thanks for God’s grace and mercy as we offer prayers on this day.
The Lord has given us the beauty of worship and the gift of fellowship with one another. We thank you Lord for gathering us on this day.
The Lord has given us life in a nation of opportunities and liberty; with public services such as fire and police protection, ambulances, food pantries, care facilities, schools, libraries, and hospitals. We thank you Lord for our national life.
The Lord has given us neighbors, friends, families, and coworkers to share the joys and burdens of this life. We thank you Lord, for the privilege of loving others.
The Lord has given us a promise that where He goes, He will prepare a place for us.
We thank you Lord for the gift of life and for giving us to one another for safekeeping. Bring us home when it is time. Lord in your grace, hear our prayer.
