Tuesday prior to Proper 16

Psalm 50:1–15—This psalm of Asaph speaks of the Lord as a mighty Judge. The Lord will judge all men based on their faithfulness and trust in Him, not on the outward show of ritual and religion. We must ever be on our guard, that we do not just ‘go through the motions,’ but that our hearts are right: that is, that we trust not in ourselves, nor in any earthly rulers or things, but solely in God the Lord for our salvation. He alone can accomplish it, and He delights in our trust in Him. Call upon me in the day of trouble, He exhorts us, and promises, I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.

Psalm 50 – Judgment begins among the people of God

The title of this psalm A Psalm of Asaph tells us that it is the first of Asaph’s psalms in the order of the Psalter. Asaph was the great singer and musician of David and Solomon’s era (1 Chronicles 15:17-19, 16:5-7, 16:7, 25:6). 1 Chronicles 25:1 and 2 Chronicles 29:30 add that Asaph was a prophet in his musical compositions.

A The Mighty One and His judgment.

1.      (1-3) The Mighty One comes to judge the earth.

2.      (4-6) The scope of judgment narrows to the people of God.

B The judgment of God against His people.

1.      (7-15) Rebuking their ritualism.

2.      (16-21) Rebuking their disobedience to His commands.[2]

Collect for Psalm 50: Heavenly Father, because Jesus your servant became obedient to death, his sacrifice was greater than all the holocausts of old. Accept the sacrifice of praise we offer you thorough him, and help us show the effects of it in our lives by striving to do your will, until our whole life becomes adoration in spirit and truth; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  [3]

Collect for Tuesday the week of Pentecost 10: Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: have compassion on our weakness and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask: through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. [4] Amen -16 August 2022
