A new heaven and a new earth
The New Jerusalem,
which the writer of Revelation mentioned in the reading last week is described
in today’s reading. Notice how it takes on the almost indescribable beauty of
shining jewelry. The symbol of the number twelve is used frequently in
describing this newly created city. Twelve is the symbol of completeness of
fullness; the totality of the house of Israel, for Israel consisted of twelve
tribes. Notice the difference in the new city; it needs no temple, no sun, no
moon, for it has God’s glory shining upon it.
The risen Lord is with
the Father in heaven. John saw a new heaven and earth coming to earth. In the
coming of the Kingdom, God comes among men. The resurrection was the first step
of God’s victory over sin and death.
In this lesson we see
the ultimate victory in God’s coming to earth. This new heaven and earth are
here now in the church. God is among His people in word and Sacrament. We look
forward to the fullness of His coming when Christ returns.
Prayer for newness of life by the Holy Spirit: O Lord God, heavenly Father, You
gave Your only Son to die for our sins and to rise again for our justification.
By Your Holy Spirit grant us newness of life that through the power of Christ's
resurrection we may dwell with Him forever; through the same Jesus Christ, our
Lord. Amen. – 11 May, 2022
Prayer for a new heart and a new spirit: Almighty and everlasting God, by the death and
resurrection of Your Son You cleansed our hearts and put a new Spirit within
us. Grant that all who are brought to newness of life in the fellowship of the
body of Christ may show forth in their lives what they confess with their lips;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.[2]
