Easter Order of Service - Matins

Matins – Easter Sunday
12 April 2020

461 I Know That My Redeemer Lives

1 I know that my Redeemer lives;
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead;
He lives, my ever-living head.

2 He lives triumphant from the grave;
He lives eternally to save;
He lives all-glorious in the sky;
He lives exalted there on high.

3 He lives to bless me with His love;
He lives to plead for me above;
He lives my hungry soul to feed;
He lives to help in time of need.

4 He lives to grant me rich supply;
He lives to guide me with His eye;
He lives to comfort me when faint;
He lives to hear my soul’s complaint.

5 He lives to silence all my fears;
He lives to wipe away my tears;
He lives to calm my troubled heart;
He lives all blessings to impart.

6 He lives, my kind, wise, heav’nly friend;
He lives and loves me to the end;
He lives, and while He lives, I’ll sing;
He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King.

7 He lives and grants me daily breath;
He lives, and I shall conquer death;
He lives my mansion to prepare;
He lives to bring me safely there.

8 He lives, all glory to His name!
He lives, my Jesus, still the same;
Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives:
I know that my Redeemer lives!

C and my mouth will declare Your praise.

Psalmody

L The Lord has redeemed His people.
C O come, let us worship Him.

Venite LSB Page 220

C O come, let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.  Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving, let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise.  For the Lord is a great God and a great king above all gods.  The deep places of the earth are in His hand; the strength of the hills is His also.  The sea is His, for He made it, and His hand formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our maker.  For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

L The Lord has redeemed His people.
C O come, let us worship Him.

Psalm 16:1-11

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.  I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,in whom is all my delight.The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;their drink offerings of blood I will not pour outor take their names on my lips.The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;you hold my lot.The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.I bless the LORD who gives me counsel;in the night also my heart instructs me.I have set the LORD always before me;because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;my flesh alsodwells secure.

For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,or let your holy one see corruption.You make known to me the path of life;in your presence there is fullness of joy;at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Readings from Holy Scripture– The Reality of the Resurrection

Acts 10:34-43God raised Jesus from the dead – So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

P O Lord, have mercy on us.
C Thanks be to God.

Colossians 3:1-4Believers also experience a resurrection – If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

P O Lord, have mercy on us.
C Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-eighth chapter.

Matthew 28:1-10The empty tomb witnesses to the resurrection –Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Responsory (Easter) – LSB Page 222

L Sing to the Lord and bless His name, proclaim His salvation from day to day.
C Give to the Lord all glory and strength, give Him the honor due His name. Alleluia, alleluia.
L Now is Christ risen from the dead and become the firstfruits of them that sleep.
C Give to the Lord all glory and strength, give Him the honor due His name. Alleluia, alleluia.
L Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
C Give to the Lord all glory and strength, give Him the honor due His name. Alleluia, alleluia.

LSB #417 Alleluia, Song of Gladness

1 Alleluia, song of gladness,
    Voice of joy that cannot die;
Alleluia is the anthem
    Ever raised by choirs on high;
In the house of God abiding
    Thus they sing eternally.

2 Alleluia, thou resoundest,
    True Jerusalem and free;
Alleluia, joyful mother,
    All thy children sing with thee,
But by Babylon’s sad waters
    Mourning exiles now are we.

3 Alleluia cannot always
    Be our song while here below;
Alleluia, our transgressions
    Make us for a while forgo;
For the solemn time is coming
    When our tears for sin must flow.

4 Therefore in our hymns we pray Thee,
    Grant us, blessèd Trinity,
At the last to keep Thine Easter
    With Thy faithful saints on high;
There to Thee forever singing
    Alleluia joyfully.
