Wednesday, February 17, 2016      Hallowed be Thy Name

You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Exodus 20:7

No longer does the Lord speak directly to the people. Now Moses, His servant speaks to Him. This commandment prohibits taking oaths or vows in the Lord’s name, which does not intend to keep.  To misuse God’s name is to speak it without meaning is to use God’s name unnecessarily or casually. [1]
What does God forbid in the Second Commandment God’s name is misused when people speak God’s name uselessly or carelessly. God’s name is misused when people curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie or deceive by His name. We pray that God’s name not be taken in vain…but be used well for God’s praise and honor. [Large Catechism III 45]  [2]
Bless us, O God, in this holy season, in which our hearts seek your help and healing; and so purify us by your discipline that we may grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.[3]
