Jesus Calms the Storm

Genesis 43:1-15
1 Corinthians 7:1-9

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, Let us go over to the other side. Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, Teacher, don't you care if we drown? He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, Quiet! Be still! Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? They were terrified and asked each other, Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him! -Mark 4:35-41

One evening Jesus said, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” The men left the crowd and took Jesus along in the boat. A storm came up. It was bad, very bad. The waves were filling the boat. It was a bad deal! But Jesus fell asleep on a pillow. He was sleeping in the middle of a loud and windy storm. They had to wake Him. They said, “You do not care that we’re gonna die!” Jesus said to the sea, “Peace be still!” The wind stopped and there was a great calm. It was quiet, very quiet. Jesus said to them, “Why were you so afraid? How is it that you had no faith?” They said, “Who is He? Even the wind obeys Him!”

Once when I was asleep a storm woke me up. It was the middle of the night. It was loud. It bothered me. The lightning was bright. It scared me. The thunder was very loud. It went BOOM! It woke my Mom and Dad up too. I got out of bed. I went down stairs. I found my Mom and Dad. I was scared. They prayed with me. They prayed, “Dear God, please let the storm go away.” And it went away. They asked me if I was alright. I said, “I’m OK.”

Storms happen. Storms are loud. Storms give me a headache. Storms can wake you up. But storms go away. Storms die. Then you can rest. When I prayed to Jesus I was reminded that I’m OK because Jesus is good. He still stops storms.

Dear Jesus,
Please let storms go away when they happen. Help me feel better. Help me feel calm. Help me go back to sleep so I can rest. Amen
